Letting Go

Letting her go was the hardest thing InuYasha had ever done.
Saying good-bye to Kikyou… watching Miroku and Sango fall in love when he was not free to make the same gestures of affection… hell, even killing Naraku had had nothing on the pain in his chest as he was pulled back down the well.
Hearing Kagome cry out his name as he disappeared had damn near stopped his heart.
Kagome was safe. That was all that mattered to him. He had no place in a world without youkai and hanyou. He had no place in a world where he could not be himself – especially now that Kagome had taught him to appreciate who and what he was. He would be unhappy, and make Kagome upset in turn.
And… Kagome was a child. Sure, in his time she’d have already been popping out children. But in her world, she was young and it sometimes reflected in her actions and attitudes. She needed to grow and mature with her family… she was not ready to let go.
One day, though… InuYasha knew he’d hold her again. He promised himself when she came back, things would be different. They had no quest, no former loves and fewer enemies plotting their deaths. He would be true to her and give her everything he could. He would not fuck this up.
She had a place in his world. He hadn’t been lying when he told the youkai in the Shikon no Tama that they’d been born for each other. InuYasha truly believed that.
And Kagome had promised she’d stay by his side.
InuYasha truly believed her.
He would wait.
He let go… so she could come back to him, and they could start brand new.
