Summary: Young Lordling Skullovitch finds a lady who strikes his fancy. She is Less Than Impressed. Part of my “Flights of Fancy” universe
Lord Vergerin’s grandson was bored. The Lord Horder was getting on in age, and since Bulkmeier’s father had passed away, he was next in line. Which meant lots of tedious meetings and lessons. And traveling to too-cold Telgar for the New Turn’s meeting of Holders.
Casting a glance across the courtyard, his eyes lit upon his best friend. Lordling Skullovitch of Keroon stared at where a group of wagons had gathered: traders.
“Skull!” It was difficult to make himself heard over the crowd, and even more irritating to be polite as he made his way through the mass of people. “Skull! What are you lookin’ at?”
Skullovitch pointed to a young woman. She stood proudly, chin set as she bartered with a man many years her elder. She pursed her lips as her customer looked down at the leather he was selling, and Skullovitch sighed wistfully.
“Think she’d go for an almost-Lord?”
“Only one way to find out. Who wouldn’t want to marry a Lord?” Bulkmeier asked rhetorically.
The lady finished her barter as the two neared the wagon. When her customer turned away, she allowed herself a satisfied smirk before turning to the other two. “How can I help you?”
“What’s your name?” Skullovitch asked right away.
“Kimberly,” she answered carefully. “Is there something I can get you?”
“Your hand.”
She stared in astonishment. “What?”
“In marriage,” Skullovitch added.
Kimberly suddenly perked up, but Skull’s hopes were bruised when a dark-skinned man came at the woman’s beckoning. “I’m sorry,” she apologized, “but I’m already spoken for.”
The Harper jerked as though surprised, staring at Kim for a moment before grinning at Skullovitch. “That’s right. Sorry, m’lord, but she’s mine.”
Skull pursed his lips. It wasn’t over - not by a long-shot. He had at least until she was married!
